Departure: Leaving For Community

IPB Goes To Field 2012

Official Hat of IPB Goes To Field 2012

Seemingly I will be out of posting for next a month. The university program called for voluntary to take experience on living among real community at designated villages spreading over Java, Sumatra, and southern part of Borneo. I made myself to have been registered together with other student fellows for a program called:" IPB Goes To Field 2012".

This year it has already been extended into 10 fields of concern, one I'm going to take will be in Regency of Klaten, Central Java focusing on Planthopper Eradication and Soil Quality Improvement for Sustainable Rice Production. I become more curious since this voluntary activity has great deal with my research plan for final thesis. Morever, living experience amongst farmer/local people would be more precious how I would like to be understanding from social problem to agricultural problem. Though it seems to force us the volunteers surviving in any condition. So challenging!

Counting few days, I and team will be departing to designated area where we tackle burden the way of practicing "theorical knwoledge" into real activity. It's not that simple, based on previous experience that of seniors, subjects on the class are like in the cage of bird instead of on the branch of forest. The reason why students are quitely importantly suggested to have more field experience. I agree, we almost happen unable to solve most of our problem if only we write down on a paper. The real problem is what occurring among society instead of in class.

Now, it's time to take the experience!

Harmonious in Prosperity

Indonesia, Keep Looking Down Around

I have been at the edge of outreach, to pose myself where place I have to stand on. My country is the concern, the supreme I sometimes can not compromise to literally merely say "yes" or "no" about things dealing with. Does it sound ultranationalist? I hope I don't trace the record of the hardline of anything, extravagant proclivity is not a wise idea, in my opinion. Fortunately the divine power gives people brain and heart to think and to feel, either must be running together.

Recent series of months, growing and more ever I have to recognize myself has been enjoying another part of fruitful thing what seemingly looked blur or even faded away about Indonesia. The scarcity of optimism is just diminishing yet stimulated by the unexpectable occurance, out of my inbox I guess. I regularly browse on internet -the place of wholeplace where everything is almost there- to see how people to see my country and exactly how our people to see themselves. I bring myself to catchdog people around me along the way I walk along the road, capturing some figures of what real life is. And attempting to be deer amongst the jungle natives. I sometimes giggle, feeling blessed, getting dissapointed, feeling embarrassed, becoming fury, and many human natural reaction as response of varying informations and circumstances. There's no lasting light nor either heavy dark. It always turns playing their gleam by their own, yet grey comes to break up the sharp contrast.

The first intake of optimism drived me I don't really remember when it had begun, I become more curious since I found a website a source of crave trigger to convince people (Indonesian particularly) there's a good thing about this country beside its blooming bad news revealing what darn bad thing is going on. Later I try to connect through its twitter account. Sometimes I post comment whenever I'm really stunned of amazing information or either whenever I feel it's necessary to appreciate the motivating article. It stimulates me to search the more optimism news the more I satisfy my pessimism thirst.

Indonesia's economy has attracted people whose concern once someone opens his/her eyes. There's plenty of article that of economist to reveal their view of a prospective future belonging to Indonesia. The Roy Morgan's research barely expose the rising of Indonesia economy from statictical approach covering high Consumer Confidence Index, the indulging tie of economy booming competition with China and India, and so fourth. The Forign Policy recently published the emergence of tiger post world war II to possibly drive world economy, called Indonesia. Well, it may become more complicated to be understood yet it sounds fruitful. Let me share some experiences in real life based on my humble observation around me.

Some years ago when I was in Junior school (around 10 years ago), my friends would be proud of his/her camera phone. Today most people even an elementary student clutch Blackberry or Android Smartphone within their small fingers. Technology plays vital role to develop, so it's understandable. But remarkable growing of middle class people felt very windy here. Almost settlement ranging from small town to megacities own at least a mobile phone. Indeed suprisingly when I realize number of mobile phone circulated within this country is two folds than number of population itself. By raw calculation, there are some 480 millions more mobile phone devices. The calculation doesn't include account of latest production, it was in 2011. Supported by very fast growing of online store, the confidence of online shopping contribute to size number of small to medium enterprise expand their market. Recently Google and YouTube officially establish their Indonesian office in collaboration with regarding Ministries to enhance small to medium enterprise reach. The growth of internet reach and mobile phone bless underground e-consumer (including me and young firends) to enjoy more Indonesian creative products.

When I go to airport, the way I feel I'm totally in a crowd. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) is no longer convenient, it prevails since latest ten years ago or before. Not to mention the growth of aircraft number parking over the runway, indeed it exceeds the paved way capacity. Now many Indonesian enjoy to travel both domestic destination and international destination by plane. The sign that explains middle-class people is in spring, blooming like flower. Few days ago I deliver my Japanese student fellows to airport when they have to fly to Bali before coming back to their home university through Osaka with Garuda Indonesia). A friend of mine barely started to argue at one of American franchise food store where we had lunch, "Can you see? I don't think I can count how many rich people in this country". Wait, I just smile and replied, "Me too, let's see how people around us, some people come to airport with their very expensive branded cars and making checking at the desk of notable full service airlines". Yess, it has been more clear here, Singapore Airlines for instance, though number of flight to Singapore quite busy and very competitive, there's is always seat to be booked. In addition, they don't merely be able to choose Economy class, indeed moreover they are enough to settle at Business and First Class cabin. Meanwhile Garuda Indonesia is now more reachable since its transformation. If some years ago GIA is very exclusive due to people's capability to buy the ticket is still far lesser than today. Thanks to its very stunning growth and excellent service, supported by people's ability to reach the price, GIA seems now flying people to more various. Meanwhile Lion Air's record followed by Batavia Air, Sriwijaya Air, Mandala Air, and Merpati puts even bigger attention who contribute to uplift social identity since they are now flying middle-class some folds. More important, they connect this nation robustly linked breaking down geographical barrier. Now flying to Aceh or Papua from Jakarta is no longer barrier as long as you have money to buy more expensive ticket rather than to Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Considerably the distance is further, yet I guess Papua and surroundings as well as Aceh are more beautiful by its virgin nature and amazing view and people.

Hold on! So far I merely explain literally about "Indonesian (can) buy anything", I don't expect we only can buy without being able to produce. Don't force me to think how to make a stuff than sell it to costumer subsequently become rich. Nor do I want my friends to get money by very simple thinking way instead of considering the multiple effect. I would like to invite ourselves how to be more creative, then impress people by our work, then they buy with very high price for its creative value. Yess, the reason makes me  more happy since the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy established after reshuffle. We (Young Indonesian) properly takes this moment to change the way of thinking. "We don't need to be having lot of money because of we export so abundant raw resource materials, but we can create money by utilizing very few number of resource with the same output. All we need is creativity and craving ambition". It means we still own and preserve our wealthy reasource blessed by God. In any emergency situation, it can sustain us even longer. By any means it doesn't mean we would like to become "stingy", instead, by having more resource drives us to contribute more appropriately to help other. As a country who strongly exclaiming themselves to be "World Peace Initiator and Preserver" as barely resoluted on Constitution Preambule 1945, Indonesia should be consistent to burden great mission through its wealth and power.

But I still have a question, "Does become wealthy nation is the main goal?". Having lot of money and natural resources and great power and many admiring things are a pride. But more than anything, having qualified human resources leads anything. But one more again it's not enough, a country with admiring attitude of citizen could beat and lead anything. Now, strong economy doesn't completely represent strong country. There must be supported by its qualified civilization. All can be reached by a country who is able to solve its social problem wisely. That's what I say: "Indonesian Dream".

We don't need to sleep to have a good dream, we are better still awakened with painful sacrifice to enlive dream. To be recognized, living in a country with vary diverse ethnics, languages, cultural background, religions, ideology, human characters is not simple. Social problem is just around and very susceptible to trigger the conflict. Now, as the emergence economy seems to be shiny, we could be worried of its social impact, at least to put concern on it is appropriately to be studied. When more people buy cars, the more we see on the crowd street in Jakarta emerging tendency of tolerant devastating. Driver shouts the horn hardly once traffic light turns into red after very crazy traffic jam. In other city like Jogja as comparison, it's not a polite. Last few days ago I went to a mall, the growing number of this kind public place is flourishing in big cities, as well as it contributes to the change of environment and social behaviour for its over exceeding number to satisfy certain enterprise's billion worth. People seemded to be accustomed with "Ignorant Culture". I saw a 5 to 6-year-old child to sell some pieces of cheap crisp which is very contrary with the place he was around. Just few meters from him the luxurius cars were around to get in and out and none of them stopped for awhile. He offered his crisps to people who walked over him, almost no one took care of it. I even screwed myself how I realized much things I lost to be thankful for who I've been. A very touching and embarassing to prove we've changed and enjoying many fruitful things without attempting to look around. Don't blame and screw criminal disaster occurring over public place as consequence of stressful life due to devastating economic gaps, if only so far we don't do anything through social aids campaign.

I got one more very precious lesson during a lecture few weeks ago. My lecturer had just returned from Mentawai islands, a remote and border islands where become famous since earthquake and tsunami hit and killed more people. He started to share: "You must be feeling lucky and thankful my dearest student, if you think you would see how Indonesia in 1950's was, I suggested you to go far inside and remote place of this nation. I've returned from Mentawai and I proved it. The native told me: They would be very thankful if tsunami or earthquake hit their hometown again, so they could gain more aids and having better life". Once upon the time we were silent, I whispered to myself it's a big deal required to be concerned. Thanks to institution/NGOs/movement/whom concern to distribute message of the importance of social value and awareness behind the growing economy which merely very few people put respect on it.

When a blessing wealth belong to us, don't forget to look around us. May Indonesia someday will have grown as country with good attitude citizen and become powerful nation with its blessing resources.

Malaysia Trip III: The 3rd International Agriculture Student Symposium (IASS)

Symposium Just Begun

It's been started here for next several days I and friends stay in Bangi, a small town in Selangor near Putrajaya (Malaysia Capital for Governmental Affairs). Our first day is registration of participant along with other participants from China (Nanjing Agricultural University), Thailand (Kasetsart University), Japan (Ibaraki University and Niigata University), Russia (Chechen State University), Canada (University of Guelph), Indonesia (IPB, Padjajaran University, Riau University, and Diponegoro University), and host country Malaysia (UPM, University Malaysia Trengganu, and University Sultan Zainal Abidin). It looks so hectic the committee have to prepare participant arrival, growing number compared with previous event.

The second and third day of our stay are visiting some UPM laboratories, institution or any other research institution. The most exciting is exactly to Putrajaya where the atmosphere felt quite different. Understandable since previous destination seems so official. Though this governmental area is the second of mine to be here since my first visit in the mid of 2010.

Majid Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin

Well-deigned building that of certain Ministries at the edge of river

Just few hours before departing to the center of Putrajaya river, we all delegates visit Ministry of Agirculture And Agro-Based Industry hundreds meter away still located within Putrajaya city. Information of current development of Malaysia particularly agriculture is barely exposed through presentation from the due persons as well as captured over mini exhibition in the first floor. Moreover, the neighbouring countries agro resources showed off though few portion, an idea to put Malaysia as center of agricultural information, likely here to point out tropical agricultural cuts off the boundary of countryside. A thourough sign of vibrating resource in Indonesia seems to be always well observed and none of indeed suprising realm for the second time of mine to see even more some of Indonesia agricultural resources exhibited as well as few from India and Thailand. "Kuda Sumbawa" figured over a medim size of poster which is orinigally from my hometown, visitors can see the brief information here. Flashing light shimmers to wake me up how Indonesia should appropriately be more ambitious by the way of promotion and not to missing concerning of local resource research.

Almost hal of the day spent off here in Putrajaya, we depart to UPM campus for a short campus tour subsequently returning back to hostel in Bangi. Tonight we have to be ready at Panggung Percubaan (inside UPM campus) for Malaysian cultural performance. A series of show takes quite some hours till the closing attraction has ended, so photo session goes playing. We wear modified Indonesia traditional custom seemingly looking casual. And so Japanese student coming up with their even more casual "yukata". Let me guessing tonight flocked by merely "casual traditional costumes", apparent reason since our respective performance will be held by the day of farewell. So here we come as audience.

Back to the point, presentation is mainly time consuming during our stay. Varying notions proposed/presented/questioned by participant at each section starting from 09.15 till 17.00 Malaysian time  for respective next four days.

Delegates of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) Indonesia

University Representative, UPM Comission, and Deputy Minister of MOA Malaysia
It has been the edge of the day, day of presentation I mean. Next two days will be excursion, the most waiting moment. Exactly just the same like previous event, we visit Petronas Twin Tower at heart of KL, Berjaya Times Square, and merely I and one of friend cheat the time to hang out to Bukit Bintang by walking since we don't find much thing or to-do-thing here at Berjaya TS.

During queueing before lifting up to the skybridge and the peak

KL viewed from Petronas Skybridge

Another tower of the Twin at 86th floor

Time has ended up! Well, compiling up clothes and stuffs into the luggage then departing to KLIA this morning. Lion Air flight JT283 bound from KLIA to Jakarta has ready parked over the apron. Now leaving on the jet plane and say good bye to Malaysia. Next time I may come again for another cities.

SUIJI International Program

SUIJI 2012
(Six Universities Initiative Japan-Indonesia)

I was just once logged on FB account and just like usual checking up for newsfeed or notification. A pal appears on chat box asking me for a favor. He seems to crave for immediate response as asking for voluntary to manage this kind of a new program crossing over my head. I -for some turns- used to get involved in international committee organizing event in campus when international student come. I couldn't agree more, yes I say though having no idea stuff gonna be handled. Just two days later a SMS received on my smartphone, the committee members are asked for first gathering and job-list designation. Even more surprising when I realize the program will be started no more than a week. Well, in any circumstance, just be relax and keep holding on to think how to make it HAPPEN!

So, it's such a busy whole-week with just merely some 20 studs we all (undergrads) have to ensure the preparation is ready just right before our guests coming. The program called SUIJI standing for Six Universities Initiative Japan-Indonesia. Here three universities from Japan which originate from Shikoku island such as Ehime University, Kagawa University, and Kochi University and some three others are my college Bogor Aggricultural University, Universitas Gadjah Mada, and Hasanudin University in Makasar. For our first committee gathering, I'm chosen as Coordinator of Student Paper Presentation in which my due turn will be the second day of participant stay. Well, there's no any rules yet the way of terms the paper should be. I guess this time I curiously invite my 'time-running-job' to make it managed to achieve. A stumbling idea is far  thrown away instead of creativity (really?). Flipping up my portable PC then departing to Ms.Publisher apps. The only one step crossing over my tiny head is how about to rule the paper and its presentation material. I cite from default the same I accomplish my last project and so adding touch of art sense onto brochure appearance. Done, I'm finally at the paper rule publication. Spending some hours till almot 2.30 am I'm along with the calm. I soon forward to our Student Affairs Advisor for screening and cheking, at the morning I wake up like drunk and chilling out my email inbox he accepts my work. Done! Now forward it to Ehime University lecturer who is in charge managing entire Jap student paticipiant preparation from three university members as well as forwarding to other Indonesia universities.

Well, Sunday (27/05) is their arrival. Japanese student fly with Garuda Indonesia from Osaka Kansai (KIX) to Jakarta (CGK) with stopover in Denpasar Bali (DPS). Including our university official TV staff (Cameraman) from Green TV, me and other two committees head to airport to pick up our new fellow from Japan. Other committees are managing Indonesian student and the rests are staying at university dorm for preparation. GIA flight is on-time as usual and there's no matter fortunately it's going smooth. I draw a welcome poster in the mean time used as sign to let them identify us at arrival room. The groups are flocking and getting out the gate. We offer two university buses which one is for luggage and other exactly for passenger load.

Monday (28/05) we are ready for opening ceremony, my pal leads a group discussion which each university participant is mingled randomly in composite group. We discuss about future student plan and cooperation built in the next year at leat by this program running. Any ideas are welcome and suggestion promoted to exhibit. Now every student can speak up and direct their plan for next agenda. Later the conclusion will build Declaration, we state "SUIJI Bogor Declaration 2012".

Tuesday (29/05) is just around the corner. The night before I compile participating university paper and exactly make editing before it turns into default before copy spreading. Prosiding is the way of publication later when the event ends. Since our schedule must be subject of any emergency change, I personally together with other committee member would have designed respective plan from A to H-execution. We commute from dorm to CCR (Common Class Room) apparently big enough including main auditorium. Here scientific sense of student is encouraged to bare the idea and finding solution of current issue in three major scopes Food, Environment and Energy in Indonesia and Japan. A great notion is proposed, exchanges are about there.

In the evening the declaration is commenced, I represent the participant to declare "SUIJI Bofor Declaration 2012" then signed by respective university delegates from 6 univs. The night we continue with closing remark and dinner. Here student look so happy and each group has to present their performance. So funny! They become more crazy indeed. Though the rest day felt so tired, but we are happy!

Wednesday (30/05) all participant must be ready at 6.30 since our trip will be out of the campus area. We visit Bogor Botanical Garden situated at heart of Bogor surrounnded by lush of green, the air is so fresh! The guide lead us to introduce tropical species and so does present history of this hisorical garden. The place I ever visited last year for practical study of my Ecology subject.

At noon we visit Mekarsari fruit land taking around 2 hours from Bogor. Having lunch there and some exciting games such as Bakiak Race and Eggplant-Ball Shooting.

Group Six

Salak (a type of tropical fruit) is the most among other fruit my Jap fellow grab, don't know why but Nao-kun tell me it's his fav. From one site to another site of each the fruit  is planted, not to missing melon in the greenhouse, taste fresh. It's almost 4 pm we have to return to Bogor for dinner. We head to Botani Square a modern-store owned by our university with some kinds of stuff from movie cinema, food court, bookstore, agricultural store, tourism store, and other things.

Photo Session before Farewell

At night we decide having no sleep since tomorrow morning some delegates will depart to airport for Makassar and Jogja. So we're going for party! Yeah! It's awesome party with music, games, and dance from 12 midnight till 3 am. It's kinda weird but exciting. The Japanese party and Indonesian party meet the way of melting down to mingle. You know we are youth-blooded and still powerful (really?).

It's a sad moment when I have to deliver my fellows to the bus before departing to airport. We just promise to meet someday, friendship stays even longer and lasting :-)

Dedicated to SUIJI members
